Oil Filter Heat Shield – Protect Your Oil Filter from Heat and Road Hazards

An oil filter heat shield is a smart upgrade for high-performance and daily-driven vehicles, helping reduce oil temperatures and extend oil life. Oil filters are often mounted close to hot headers and in low-airflow zones, which can lead to overheating and degraded performance. The Lava or Stealth Oil Filter Shield combats this by insulating the oil filter from extreme engine bay heat while also guarding it against debris on and off the road.

Crafted from a volcanic rock fiber-based thermal barrier, the shield fits snugly over the oil filter and stays secure with built-in high-temp magnets—allowing for easy removal when needed. These magnets also serve a secondary purpose by capturing metal particles, enhancing filtration and protecting your engine. The shield is designed to withstand continuous temperatures up to 1,200°F and intermittent spikes up to 2,000°F, and it is resistant to oil, solvents, and water.

By reducing radiant heat from exhaust components, the Oil Filter Shield helps maintain consistent oil temperatures, preventing thermal breakdown and prolonging oil filter life. It also defends against debris that could cause filter damage, oil loss, or even engine failure.

Available in sizes to fit most standard canister-style oil filters, the Lava and Stealth Oil Filter Heat Shields are an easy and effective upgrade for improved reliability and performance. (Patent pending)

FAQ

Won’t the Lava Oil filter Shield retain heat inside the filter?

While it may seem like covering an oil filter could trap heat, the oil filter itself is not designed to dissipate heat—its primary function is filtration. In reality, the ambient heat from nearby exhaust components is often much higher than the oil temperature inside the filter. This external heat poses a greater risk, as it can heat soak the filter and the oil passing through it.

On engines like the LS platform, the factory oil cooler is positioned close to the filter, which can cause additional heat exposure before the oil even reaches the cooler. The Lava Oil Filter Shield acts as a thermal barrier, protecting the filter from surrounding engine bay heat, not trapping it—ultimately helping maintain more stable oil temperatures and improving overall performance.
